Kakabeka Falls

Kakabeka Falls, known as the “Niagara of the North”, is the second largest waterfall in Ontario. 30 km (19 mi) west of Thunder Bay, Ontario, this dramatic fall is in Kakabeka Falls a part of the Oliver Paipoonge Municipality. Kakabeka Falls is a 130ft drop off along the Kaministiquia River. The gorge below reveals 1.6 million-year-old rocks and fossils.

Sea Lion Trail

The round-trip hike from the South Kabeyun Trailhead parking lot, to the end of the Sea Lion Trail, and back is 2.4km and takes roughly an hour to complete. This trail has somewhat difficult access over an outcrop, passes a pebble beach on Perry Bay, and concludes at a diabase rock arch on Lake Superior. Interpretive panels are a must-read for anyone interested in the fascinating geology of this unique formation.

Ouimet Canyon

Ouimet Canyon

Located 45 minutes east of Thunder Bay on Hwy 11/17, Ouimet Canyon features panoramic views of a 150-metre-wide gorge and sheer cliffs that drop 100 metres straight down to the canyon floor. A trail and boardwalk connect two lookout platforms with spectacular views of the canyon, along with the Indian Head. Arctic plants, usually found 1,000 km north, survive in the unique environment at the bottom of the canyon. The cost is by donation.

Down Hwy 61, you will find Eagle Ridge Trout Pond which has been owned and operated for over 15 years. Here you can fish in a relaxing park setting where everyone has a good chance of catching something. This catch and release is a place where people of all ages can come and enjoy hassle-free fishing. Eagle Ridge also offers 3 RV campsites, 2 rental cabins, general store, and in-ground swimming pool, sauna, and a large picnic area.

This outdoor paradise is home to Canada’s longest, highest and fastest zipline, along with Canada’s longest suspension bridges. It is surrounded with spectacular scenery, beautiful landscapes, and serene surroundings. Eagle Canyon is home to 2 suspension bridges spanning 300 and 600 feet across the canyon hanging 152 feet about the canyon floor.

Duke Hunt Historical Museum

Duke Hunt Historical Museum

Located on Rosslyn road, the Duke Hunt Historical Museum (formerly known as the Paipoonge Museum) preserves the memory of early settlers, showing the hardships and pleasures they experienced in their new community. Named Duke Hunt after the original curator H.K. Hunt, it reflects his passion to preserve local history and generous collection donations of his own artifacts.  The museum was created in a spare room in the Slate River School and later the present building was erected to house the museum collection.
