Townscape Murals

Murals

The Lake of the Woods Heritage Townscapes began in 1994 to present an outdoor gallery in Kenora. The project was to raise pride in the rich heritage of the area and create beauty in an urban setting. There are 18 remaining murals, which make history come alive for the locals and visitors.

Check out the public art murals scattered throughout downtown Kenora. You can pick up a map at the Lake of the Woods Discovery Centre.

Douglas Family Art Centre

Douglas Art Centre

The Douglas Family Art Centre is a new addition to Kenora.  Opening in 2019, the Douglas Family Art Centre’s collection is based on a donation of over 60 W.J. Phillips paintings of the Lake of the Woods and surrounding area.  As the only public art gallery between Thunder Bay and Winnipeg, the Douglas Family Art Centre captures the spirit of the North, often featuring indigenous, nationally and internationally recognized artists.

Early Harvesters Mural

Story behind  Mural: Slim Luman stands with his foot on the running board of a loaded Linn Hauler equipped for summer. In winter, sleigh runners replaced the front wheels, and the versatile machine became the “locomotive” pulling a train of loaded sleighs.
