Sheriff Creek Wildlife Sanctuary

This 182-hectare area features many different plant and animal species that are native to the Elliot Lake area. The sanctuary features water, wetland, forest, field, meadow and escarpment habitats. You can access the sanctuary by foot or park your vehicle in a convenient entrance spot. From the entrance, you can find trails that lead to many different environments.

Hazelwood Lake

Minutes from Thunder Bay, there's something for everyone at Hazelwood Lake. This large, semi-wilderness area is perfect for full day family outings. Enjoy a refreshing swim at the beach, a relaxing evening of fishing and barbecuing or a leisurely walk along one of the many trails. In the winter you can explore the trails by snowshoe.

Pigeon River Provincial Park

Explore the trails at Pigeon River Provincial Park, with options ranging from a barrier-free boardwalk ending at a waterfall viewing platform to the challenging Lookout Trail offering spectacular views over Lake Superior and Pigeon River.

Mattawa River Provincial Park

The Mattawa River once served as a key route for trappers and loggers, and Indigenous nations before that. Today, you can retrace their path with a Mattawa River canoe outing or, for the more adventurous, whitewater rafting. 

Komoka Provincial Park

This near-urban park is located along the scenic Thames River. Much of the park is former agricultural land now succeeding to meadows, the river portion is located in mature forests.

The park is open year-round for day-use.
