Merrickville Swing Bridge

Merrickville Swing Bridge

The Rideau Canal passes through Merrickville and in the summer months the blockhouse, which guarded the canal from potential American attacks in the past, is open to the public. The old manual locks and swing bridge are still in operation and worth checking out.

Canada’s First Railway Tunnel was completed in 1860 for the Brockville and Ottawa Railway and later owned by the Canadian Pacific Railway until being acquired by the City of Brockville in 1983. The Tunnel is a remarkable example of Canada’s pre-Confederation industrial heritage and is open to the public. Key features of the Tunnel are a new paved concrete floor, state-of-the-art energy efficient lighting and a music soundtrack to help bring history to the present.

The Mammoth Cheese

The Mammoth Cheese Perth Ontario

To help promote Canadian cheese-making internationally, twelve Larnark County cheesemakers contributed a day’s worth of milk each to help make the "World’s Largest Cheese" for the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair. The finished product cost weighted 22,000 lbs and stood six feet tall. It was made from the equivalent of one day’s milk from 10,000 cows!

A full scale reconstruction of the original Mammoth Cheese is now a monument at the Tay Basin in Downtown Heritage Perth.

North Frontenac has the darkest skies in southern Ontario and it is the perfect place for star gazing. Many of us have taken for granted that the dark sky is a natural beauty and forgot, or never realized, that many people have no idea what can be seen in the heavens above at night. In 2013, the Township of North Frontenac became the first municipality in Canada to receive Dark Sky Preserve status from the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada.
