This basilica, Mother Church of Western Canada, is a place of worship,
one of the greatest emblems of the City of Winnipeg,
a popular tourist attraction, as well as a major architectural and artistic symbol in St. Boniface, Winnipeg, and Manitoba.
Construction of this Ukrainian Catholic church in the Rural Municipality of Springfield began in 1930, designed by priest-architect Philip Ruh, and it was consecrated 22 years later. Reverend Ruh worked
alongside his congregation in building the largest of his remaining creations in Manitoba. He also supervised construction of the adjacent Grotto, a representation in concrete of the Grotto at Lourdes, France.
Supported by the RM of St. Andrews, the St. Andrews Heritage Centre showcases the history of the St. Andrews area. Tours, programs and events are held at the centre for the public to enjoy. The Heritage Centre is located in the St. Andrews Rectory, a National Historic Site owned by Parks Canada.
