The Fish Shop in Shuniah, known by generations of locals and visitors as the best place to buy fresh and Finnish-style smoked local fish, is located a short drive east of Thunder Bay. Opened in 1970, the shop has expanded over the years to encompass more of owner Liisa’s Karkkainen’s Finn heritage. You will find ready to heat Finnish meat pies and Karjalan piirakka (savory rice pudding pie) as well as blueberry, apple and/or rhubarb pies featuring local ingredients.

It is opened all year long from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. During the summer, it is opened from Monday to Friday 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on holidays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Our team will be happy to provide all relevant information to your stay regarding the many activities and services provided in our community as well as our region.

Founded in 1977 by Gunnard Noyes, Diamond Willow Amethyst Mine still remains as a family owned and operated amethyst mine passed down. Located beside Blue Points Amethyst mine they are just 55 kms east of Thunder Bay off Hwy 11/17 on Road #5 North. The mine is free of charge, and they charge by the bucketful or you can visit their gift shop for a polished piece of amethyst.
